Twitch is a live streaming platform, primarily known for video game streaming, though it also hosts content in categories like music, art, cooking, “IRL” (in real life) streaming, and talk shows. It’s owned by Amazon, which acquired it in 2014. The core concept is simple: streamers broadcast live video of themselves playing games, creating content, or just chatting, while viewers watch and interact in real time through a text chat that runs alongside the stream.
Streamers can earn money in several ways, including subscriptions (viewers pay a monthly fee to support a channel), “bits” (a virtual currency used to cheer or donate), ads, and sponsorships. The platform’s community culture is built around features like emotes (custom images used in chat), channel points, raids (sending your viewers over to another streamer’s channel), and clips (short highlight videos). Twitch is also a major hub for esports tournaments and gaming events. In short, it turned watching other people play video games and do other activities into a massive, interactive form of entertainment.
